*/ Cultural and historical values
Quang Ninh in general and in particular Halong was one of the cradles of prehistoric Vietnamese with 3 consecutive crops: Soi Nhu, Cai Beo and Halong. These cultures had their own characteristics and were concentrated in an independent area, not isolated. They clung tightly to the great cultures of Vietnam as Hoa Binh and Bac Son (the post-post-Palaeolithic to Neolithic).
Soi Nhu Culture (from 18,000 to 7000 years) distributed mainly in the limestone islands of Halong Bay, Bai Tu Long and some caves as Me Cung, Tien Ong Thien Long ... The most typical objects of this mountain culture are shellfish (Cylophorus) stream shellfish (Melania) of freshwater molluscs and some simple tools. The ancient inhabitants of culture Soi Nhu lived mainly on fishing and gathering shellfish. The remains of large oysters found in the caves allowed us to say that in comparison with the culture of Hoa Binh - Bac Son the same period, culture Soi Nhu was richer because she was adapting to the maritime environment.
*/ A description of Halong Bay
The special feature of the bay is its multitude of rocky peaks. There are 1,969 islands and rocky islets, with many coves. Some islands are dug caves, the most famous are the "Surprise Cave" and one named by the French "Cave of Wonders". Other caves lead to inland lakes. The set comprises the largest Karst marine world.
The vegetation consists mainly of saxifrage, due to the thinness of the humus layer. Since 17 December 1994, the site is inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage. In 2011, Halong Bay was elected as one of the seven natural wonders of the world
The formation of Halong Bay
Geologists explain the formation of the karst as follows: the Paleozoic (or Primary era, between 543 and 250 million years) the site was on the high seas A thick layer of sediment was formed at that time.. The movements of the Earth's crust were then fractured and the retreat of the sea was exposed to the action of erosion. The rain and underground rivers have dug so many caves. The collapse of some caves has completed the formation of the landscape.
*/ The legend
Ha Long means "descending dragon" in Vietnamese. Indeed, the legend, the unique landscape of the bay is due to the dragon, be wonderful and beneficial to Vietnam, to be lowered into the sea to harness ocean currents. Struggling, he would have notched and the mountain with its tail. And as the water level would be mounted, only the highest peaks have emerged.
*/ History of the Bay of Ha Long
The caves of the islands have been inhabited for about 4000 years BC.
Ha Long Bay has been the site of several naval battles. This labyrinth has allowed the Vietnamese army to stop the Chinese neighbors by three times. In 1288, General Trang Hung Dao stopped Mongol sinking their fleet. Piles used at the time were found in the cave of Bouts de Bois, on the island of Wonders, and are exposed to the Museum of Hai Phong.
At the end of the eighteenth century, the bay served as a refuge of pirates, the Chinese and Vietnamese authorities have managed to eradicate. From 1810 they left the site and went up the rivers, hunted by the Royal Navy.
During colonization, the French have mapped the bay and baptized some islets. As the bay had open pit coal deposits, it was operated by the French company.
During the Vietnam War, many passages have been undermined by the United States, which still represents a threat today. During the war against the Americans, the PRC has supported the government of North Vietnam in particular sending ships equipped with anti-aircraft guns. Based in Ha Long, they now allow the Vietnamese People's Navy to monitor and ribs and obviate any Chinese incursions.
